My interest in swimming began at a very early age. Growing up on the shores of Lake Ontario, I had the privilege of watching the great Gus Ryder train his famous protégé Marilyn Bell for her swims across Lake Ontario and the English Channel. I knew that one day I would become involved with the sport.

I have been instructing swimmers in an aquatic environment since the age of 16. I started working as a lifeguard and instructor at the Military Base in CFB Suffield, Alberta. I also did some part time guarding and instructing at the YMCA in Medicine Hat at the same time.

I began competitive swimming when she was 9 years old on the recommendation of her doctor to help control her asthma. It became apparent at this young age that she had a natural aptitude for swimming and took top honors at her first Division II meet for all of Eastern Canada.
