Deidre Reed (NCCP Skills Coach Trained)

I have been instructing swimmers in an aquatic environment since the age of 16. I started working as a lifeguard and instructor at the Military Base in CFB Suffield, Alberta. I also did some part time guarding and instructing at the YMCA in Medicine Hat at the same time. I then settled down with my husband and started our family leaving work while I had our three kids. I went back and recertified all of my guarding and instructing qualifications after my kids were a bit older. I was then hired on with the City of Medicine Hat, both as an instructor and a lifeguard.

I became involved in competitive swimming with my kids. I found that they were going through the Red Cross levels very quickly and they were still very young. I felt that they needed more time in the water and a better challenge, so I enrolled them in the competitive club in Medicine Hat. When we moved to Port Alberni it was important to me that they continue swimming to keep up their level of fitness. I discovered that we have an excellent swim club here in Port and I was eager to help out in any way.
Tsun put my knowledge of instructing to use and recruited me to help couch the Fundamental part of Tsunami Swim Club. I have just recently taken my NCCP Skills Coach Course to enable me to become a more effective coach. I find coaching to be very rewarding. It is a great pleasure when you see the kids developing their new skills and sharing in their excitement and pride.
