The TSUNAMI (TSUN) Aquatic Club Program

The TSUNAMI (TSUN) Aquatic Club Program
- provides for our youth in Port Alberni from entry to national levels.

Note: Our nation's health experts are increasingly concerned about the level of activity the average Canadian engages in on a daily basis.
This article explains benefits of our Tsunami competitive swimming:
The most obvious benefit to competitive swimming at any age is that it gets us moving. More importantly, swimming engages us in a sport that we will be able to continue with throughout our lifetime without concern for damaging joints, breaking bones, or placing undue stress on our bodies. In fact, because of the high levels of humidity, swimming has been found to make breathing more comfortable for people with lung conditions, such as asthma. Beyond that, swimming utilizes all of the major muscle groups and provides an excellent workout for our hearts and lungs.
Aside from the ample physical benefits of the activity, competitive swimming provides a supportive, social outlet for people of all ages. While actually competing in races is not essential (about 45% of all swimmers on club teams actually race outside of their home program), being part of an organized training group has several advantages:
Professional coaching – Coach Mark E Fellner (Silver +, Gold and Senior squads) is an NCCP Level IV coach with 3 Olympic experiences in 1984, 1992, 1996. Preparing youngsters for Mark is coach Hugh Sproule (Bronze and Silver) who brings over 30 years of experience to our entry level Competitive swimmers at Tsun.
Time Management Skills – swimmers must learn to be organized
Peer support – Tsunami swimmers are just like a big family
Social outlet - Swimming is Fun
Access to facilities – our program uses both Wet and Dry components and tools like under water video for feedback and stroke awareness.
Individual Challenges and advancement – Swimmers develop at their own pace!
Encouraging young people to become involved in swimming will not only provide them with needed physical activity and build healthy habits but the club experience will also form friendships and develop good character traits, such as sportsmanship, determination, responsibility, and integrity that will serve them a lifetime.
Most clubs have a variety of training groups broken down by age. For example, the Tsunami Fundamentals program is divided into three semesters that allow for ample time for participation in other community sport and cultural activities. The more competitive programs are called Bronze, Silver, Gold and Senior range from basic to advanced training, and competition preparation. In the near future we will even advertise a Masters program for our community!
